The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the façade of the Teatro del Pueblo. It was built in 1934 on the grounds of the old tenements and stables of the Convent of Loreto and the orchards of the former College of San Pedro and San Pablo, founded by the Jesuit college of San Gregorio; galleries and arches from it were preserved, which formed the basis and determined the style for the development of the project.
This innovative construction of more than 12,000 metres involved an investment of a million and a half pesos. It was designed by the architect Antonio Muñoz, who for the first time proposed the building of a two-storey market containing a theatre. The theatre was adorned with murals by disciples of Diego Rivera, Antonio Pujol and Ángel Bracho, the American Pablo O'Higgins and the Japanese Isamu Noguchi, expressing exploitation, racism and oppression.
