The story behind the icon
The station icon shows the silhouette of the statue of Carmen Salinas, sculpted by Alejandro Vázquez, which stands on the forecourt of the Teatro Blanquita. The station is named after the Teatro Blanquita, alongside which it lies, in the Centro neighbourhood. The Teatro Blanquita is one of the most important popular theatres in Mexico City. It grew out of an initiative by Margo Su and her husband Félix Cervantes, who founded the Carpa Margo on the Plaza Villamill. The first performance was given by singers, dancers and comedians such as Clavillazo and Pompín II, as well as Dámaso Pérez Prado, Luis Alcaraz, Los Diamantes, María Victoria, Toña la Negra and Celia Cruz, among others. Because of its decay it was demolished in 1958 on the orders of the then Regent of the City, Ernesto P. Uruchurtu. A new theatre was built in its place and given the name Blanquita, in honour of Blanca Eva Cervantes. It was reopened on 27 August 1960 with a performance by Libertad Lamarque. In 1999 it was restored and reopened once more in March of that same year, with a tribute to the revue actors who had performed on its stage.
