The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the flag of the Republic of Chile. The station takes its name from its position in the Centro neighbourhood, on the street República de Chile. This flag dates from 17 October 1817. The upper band is deep blue and white and the lower one red. In the blue canton there is a five-pointed star in white. The blue represents the Pacific Ocean and the colour of the sky; the white, the snowy range of the Andes; and the red, the blood shed by the heroes of independence. Legend says that the colours in fact come from the banners of the Mapuche troops during the Arauco War. The design is attributed to the Spaniard Antonio Arcos, although some historians think it was really designed by Gregorio de Andía y Varela.
