The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is the bust of José María Morelos y Pavón, who was born on 30 September 1765 in Morelia and died in the State of Mexico on 22 December 1815.
As a soldier he stood out for holding the siege of Cuautla against Calleja's forces for more than two months; he then took the towns of Oaxaca and Acapulco. He carried on the struggle for Independence that the priest Hidalgo had begun in 1810. He won important victories over the royalist forces, holding the provinces of Puebla, Oaxaca and Michoacán for some time. He convened and installed a Congress at Chilpancingo, at which an act was drawn up declaring Mexico an independent nation in the form of a Republic.
The Congress later moved to Tehuacán under Morelos's escort; surprised by strong Spanish forces on 6 November 1815, he was taken prisoner at Texmalaca. He was brought to Mexico City under every precaution. There he was tried by the Tribunal of the Inquisition and sentenced to death. He was shot at San Cristóbal Ecatepec on 22 December 1815.
