The story behind the icon
The station icon represents a duck on the water.
The origin of the place and its name date from the times of the viceroyalty, when a church was built under the patronage of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, commonly known by the name of La Candelaria.
The site chosen to build the church was almost uninhabited, but very fertile because of the dampness of the ground produced by the lakes that covered part of the great Tenochtitlan, which caused numerous ducks to arrive.
The inhabitants of the district took advantage of this to do business in the little square in front of the church of La Candelaria. In time a duck market formed, so the people called it Candelaria de los Patos.
The little square and the whole district were demolished, and new buildings were raised in their place.
