The story behind the icon

For many years the Merced market stood on the site of the convent built at the beginning of the 17th century. The Mercedarians remained there until December 1860, when the Reform Laws obliged them to leave.
Two years later the building began to be pulled down so that the market could be raised in its place. A new one was inaugurated in 1880. A fountain was built in the middle of the market to supply it with water.
In 1957 the construction of a proper market was ordered. A site was chosen east of the old market, beyond Anillo de Circunvalación avenue. The market consists of two halls. The larger is given over to the sale of poultry, fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and groceries. Facing it there are three further sections: one for popular toys and traditional crafts; the second for the sale of flowers and ornamental plants; and the third for the sweet market.
There are shops in the underpass as well, selling rope, basketry and many craft goods such as baskets, chiquihuites, tompeates and so on.
