The story behind the icon
The station image shows the silhouette of one of the mysteries that give the causeway its name.
The Calzada de los Misterios was built in colonial times to link the old settlement of Tepeyac with Mexico City. In December 1675 Francisco Marmolejo and Isidro Zuriñana conceived the idea of building 15 shrines along the sides of the causeway, each dedicated to one of the 15 mysteries of the rosary; they were completed on 14 August 1676.
These shrines were quarry-stone structures four metres long by 1.50 wide and eight high, each made up of three tiers: the first served as the base of the structure; the second held a mystery in relief; and the third held an image, also in relief, with another small image above it in the form of a statue.
Only eight of those structures survive, in ruins. In 1854 the Calzada de los Misterios was remodelled, and years later a railway line was laid along it, carrying the trains bound for Puebla and Veracruz.
It was finally urbanised in modern times and is now a broad avenue.
