The story behind the icon
The station icon is an agave plant.
Valle Gómez comes from the surname of the owners of the paddock called La Vaquita, a place where magueys abounded.
Various scholars agree in stating that Mexico is the centre and origin of the spread of the maguey, since in its territory there are wild agaves of less evolved forms, as well as the greatest number of varieties. Its presence in Asian and Mediterranean countries is due to man having taken it to those places to exploit it.
The genus agave has two subgenera: littaea and agave. The first, spike-shaped and with a high content of saponin, is used for ornament and contains smilagenin, an indispensable raw material for producing steroids.
The species that make up the subgenus agave are exploited to produce fermented drinks such as pulque and distilled ones such as tequila or the mezcales, or else to extract fibres, fodder and food.
