The story behind the icon
The station icon represents a section of a duct of the piped Consulado river. The word consulate means the jurisdiction of a consul, who is a diplomatic agent in a foreign city.
Río Consulado is a canal that collects the waters of the San Joaquín and Los Morelos rivers, which come down from the slopes of the Sierra de las Cruces. The river is now piped and runs the whole length of the avenue of the same name until it flows into Lake Texcoco.
In the past there was a marsh called Los Morales. It was properly a boggy fen, and it was precisely there that these rivers emptied, forming one of the remnants of Lake Texcoco.
What is now Avenida Melchor Ocampo was in the old days called Calzada La Verónica, built to serve as a dyke for the huge marsh.
