By the names bonda or bondo, words of the Otomí dialect, the smooth nopal is known, which bears crimson fruit and corresponds to the tenochtli of the Aztecs, on which the eagle alighted to devour the serpent.
Bondojito means little nopal, and precisely where this neighbourhood stands small nopales abounded.
The nopal is one of the best-known plants of America, but it is said that Mexico is without doubt the country where it is most abundant. In the Federal District, in the borough of Milpa Alta, close to 80% of the national nopal harvest is sown, which amounts to roughly 7,000 growers sowing close to 4,052 hectares. This region produces close to 1,500 tonnes a week.
