The story behind the icon
The station image represents the main façade of the Palace of Fine Arts.
The construction of this building was initially devoted to a National Theatre, and the works were undertaken in 1904, to be finished in September 1910 and inaugurated at the commemoration of the centenary of Independence.
The building holds sculptures and artistic details which, for their execution, were entrusted to foreign workshops and sculptors.
The Catalan sculptor Agustín Querol was assigned the making of great figures representing pegasi, two of which stand for the lyric genre and the other two for the dramatic genre.
The curtain is another of the great works, a most beautiful curtain of opalescent glass mosaic, made in the United States. All the marble that clads the building was brought from Carrara, Italy, and other pieces come from various places in the Mexican Republic.
The theatre remained unfinished for many years, and it was not until 1932 that, by presidential order, the works were resumed and entrusted to the Mexican architect Federico Mariscal.
The reconstruction lasted two years, and on 29 September 1934 the Palace of Fine Arts was inaugurated.
