The story behind the icon
The station silhouette shows the bust of the illustrious hero of our Independence.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born in Guadalajara on 8 May 1753. He studied in Morelia and later entered the College of San Nicolás in Mexico, where he graduated as a philosopher and was ordained a priest.
Hidalgo is the initiator of independence in Mexico: on 15 September 1810 he and his men reached the atrium of the church of Dolores Hidalgo and set the bells pealing, beginning the movement.
On 30 July 1811 Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was shot for rising against the Spaniards; his body was buried in the chapel of San Antonio, but it was first beheaded so that his head could be taken to Guanajuato and displayed on one of the corners of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas.
With the triumph of Independence in 1821, Hidalgo's mortal remains were moved to the cathedral of Mexico City and afterwards to the column of Independence.
