The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is the bust of the Benemérito of the Americas, Benito Juárez.
He was born on 21 March 1806 in Oaxaca. His parents, Marcelino Juárez and Brígida García, died when Juárez was barely three years old. In 1833 he received his law degree. On turning 25 he was elected alderman of the town council of Oaxaca. In 1843 he married Margarita Maza. He held several public posts.
In Mexico he joined the Plan of Ayutla, proclaimed in 1854. In 1856 Juárez was appointed minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs. While in that office he signed the famous Juárez Law, and in 1859 he promulgated the Reform Laws that marked the separation of Church and State. During his government Mexico suffered an invasion by the French army and the imposition of a foreign monarchy, which he finally defeated. On 18 July 1872 he died suddenly, the victim of angina pectoris. His remains lie in the mausoleum of the San Fernando cemetery.
