The story behind the icon

The station icon represents the façade of the Balbuena General Hospital. The station takes its name from being located in the Jardín Balbuena neighbourhood. The Balbuena Emergency Hospital, as it was formerly called, was built out of the need to provide emergency care to the people of the eastern part of Mexico City. It opened on 24 April 1962 with 150 beds. Dr Luis Jiménez Abad was its first Director, and in that year 12,098 patients were treated. Because of the kind of patients received, a place was set up for the Public Prosecutor's Office, and it came to be the busiest hospital in the metropolitan area. In 1984 it changed its name to Balbuena General Hospital, with the addition of General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Primary Care services. In 1986 the speciality of Medical-Surgical Emergencies was created, a field in which the hospital was a pioneer. In 1994 the subspeciality of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Medicine was begun, the only place in Mexico where it is taught. The hospital stands out in the training of doctors, since more than 8,500 medical students from the UNAM, the IPN and other public and private educational institutions have passed through its classrooms
