The story behind the icon
The station icon is the universal symbol of medicine. The station takes its name from the nearby Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI of the IMSS, and is also an interchange with Lines 3 and 9 of the STC Metro.
The Ministry of Health decided to build a medical centre so as to take advantage of the proximity of several hospitals already in the area, and a site with suitable conditions was chosen: bounded to the north by the National Institute of Cardiology and the Mundet Maternity Hospital, now the Children's Hospital; to the south by Avenida Central; to the east by the streets of Doctor Jiménez; and to the west by Avenida Cuauhtémoc. The completed work was paid for entirely with funds provided by the National Lottery.
Its primary mission is to carry out the effective prevention of disease and the treatment and rehabilitation of the sick; it also pursues research in its two main aspects, the scientific and the clinical. The Centro Médico Siglo XXI is one of the most renowned and technologically advanced medical complexes in Mexico.
