The story behind the icon

The station icon represents a stethoscope. The station takes its name from a nearby street of that name, which forms part of the Doctores neighbourhood. The stethoscope, also called a phonendoscope, is an acoustic device used in medicine for auscultation, that is, for listening to the internal sounds of the human or animal body. It is generally used to listen to heart or breath sounds, although it is sometimes also used to detect intestinal sounds or murmurs from abnormal blood flow in arteries and veins.

It was invented in France by the physician René Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec in 1819. It all began because of the great shyness and embarrassment Laënnec felt at putting his ear to his patients' chests. It is said that on one of his walks through the French countryside he came upon two children playing around a fallen tree: one of them tapped one end of the trunk while the other listened to the taps from the opposite end. Fascinated by the youngsters' game, he picked up a branch from the ground and went to the local carpenter, whom he asked to turn it into a cylinder 30 cm long. Pleased with his new instrument, he went on to try it on one of his patients, and so the first auscultation using a stethoscope took place. The research published in Josef Skoda's "Treatise on Percussion and Auscultation" in 1839 gave this diagnostic sign a remarkable scientific and clinical practicality that endures to our own day. It consists of two rubber tubes ending in two olives that fit into the ears, and these tubes join another that holds a diaphragm and a bell, which amplify the sounds of auscultation.
