The story behind the icon
The station icon shows the silhouette of a vendor in his canoe.
It is the name of the district where flowers and vegetables were once traded, produce that the natives grew on their chinampas and carried in their canoes to the centre of the city along the canal that ran from the Chalco lagoon to Lake Texcoco.
This route was one of the favourite outings Mexico City had many years ago. It lay on the banks of the La Viga canal. What was characteristic and notable was the trip made in canoes, which people hired at a landing stage on La Viga; it began at the Garita and passed the Two-Eyed Bridge, where there were sluice gates to control the flow of the water. During Lent the outing took on enormous liveliness, and it was pleasant to see inhabitants dressed in striking costumes, soldiers in impeccable uniforms, ranchers dressed in leather and women in skirts of very bright colours.
