The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is of a friar. Saint Anthony Abbot is also known as Saint Anthony of Egypt; abbot means the superior of a convent.
When the Antonines arrived in Mexico in 1530, they asked for a place to build a church. It was granted in the south of the city, where the Calzada de Tlalpan now begins, and they proceeded at once to build the church and convent of San Antonio Abad. The construction took many years, since they had only the gifts of alms.
It was not until 1682 that they inaugurated it, and they closed it precisely when the last of the Antonines remaining in Mexico died.
