The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the angels of the state of Puebla.
Founded on 16 April 1531, Puebla de los Ángeles is the only city in New Spain conceived as a republic of Spanish farmers. For that reason free land was sought on which to establish it at a spot that was ideal, because lying halfway between Mexico City and Veracruz it would make the new town a dependable resting place on the tiring and hazardous course of New Spain's main trade route to the metropolis. The advantageous location of the state, the availability of additional indigenous labour (from Tlaxcala, Cholula, Huejotzingo and Calpan) and the quality of the region's natural resources gave rise to a vigorous economy that made Puebla important in every sense. It was only natural that in a city considered at one time the second of New Spain, culture and the arts should flourish. Driven above all by the Church, those achievements are embodied in the churches, convents and religious colleges that proliferated there.
