The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is of a ball player.
In 1950 Jesús Martínez "Palillo" created the Mutualidad Deportiva, its aim being to provide medical help to sportspeople, especially the so-called llaneros who played on open ground. Not fully satisfied with this altruistic gesture, on 20 November 1956 he created, on the lands of La Magdalena Mixiuhca, a Sports City where all the people could practise any sport.
In 1967 large extensions were made with works for Olympic facilities, taking up half of a large section, section B, to build the velodrome, the part occupied by the Palacio de los Deportes, as well as the school of Physical Education, a fencing hall, football pitches and a field hockey pitch. It lies to the east of the city and is bounded by the Circuito Interior, Avenida Río Churubusco, the Eje 3 Sur and Avenida 8. It is the largest sports centre in Mexico. It has 48 football pitches, two swimming pools, a racing circuit, six tennis courts, six for hockey, six for baseball, basketball and volleyball courts, a stadium, a gymnasium, a skating rink and a road safety school. Half a million people can use it at the same time.
