The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is a woman with a newborn child in her hand.
In the Nahuatl language this word means place of births. It bears that name because on one occasion the Mexica left Aztlán and made their way into the Valley of Mexico, settling for a long time at Tizapán, from which they were violently expelled. They left in haste, making their way into the surrounding marshes and among great reeds that grew in the central lagoon, which at that time was called Metztliapan.
To cross it they used their shields, tying them to their spears and, as if they were small rafts, ferrying the women and children across on them. They continued their flight among marshy islets and among reeds, doing so at three places that still keep their names today: Mexicalzingo, Iztacalco and Temazcaltitlán; and it was precisely at this last place that one of the women gave birth during the desperate flight. From then on they called that place Mixiuhca.
