The story behind the icon
The station image is the bust of General Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, who was born in Michoacán on 21 May 1895.
On finishing primary school he was given work in the tax collector's office, which gave him a taste for reading and later helped him find employment in a printing house. In 1925 he was military commander of the Tampico sector, and while in that port he came to know in detail the manoeuvres of the oil companies. He was elected governor of Michoacán. From 1934 to 1940 he was president of the Republic; his government was marked by social and economic reforms for the benefit of future generations, as in the case of the expropriation of the foreign oil companies. He distributed haciendas, the cotton estates of La Laguna, the henequen estates of Yucatán and the coffee estates of Chiapas. He handed over a great deal of land to the agrarian movement. On leaving the presidency, Manuel Ávila Camacho again named him secretary of National Defence. Cárdenas died on 19 October 1970 in Mexico City.
