The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the bell that was used to summon the Mexicans' movement for Independence. The word insurgent means one who rises against authority.
On 16 September 1810 the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, at Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, raised the banner of rebellion demanding an end to bad government, but without denying the power of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII.
Avenida de los Insurgentes is one of the most important arteries of Mexico City and the only one that crosses the city from north to south. To the north this avenue becomes the highway leading to the state of Hidalgo; to the south, the highway leading to the state of Morelos.
