The story behind the icon
The figure of the station is an eagle, since Cuauhtémoc means eagle that falls.
Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor, took the throne when he was 25 years old. In that year the Aztecs were commemorating the month Texcatl; they gathered in the shrine of the Templo Mayor and, at the most solemn moment of the feast, Hernán Cortés appeared and ordered his men to open fire.
Cuauhtémoc, with tremendous hatred and rancour against those who had dared to defile his homeland, fought them and in a week drove them out of the kingdom amid frightful slaughter. That was the memorable Sad Night.
