The story behind the icon
The station silhouette represents a ball player of the pre-Hispanic period. In 1943 the Single Union of Workers of the then Department of the Federal District asked the authorities at its annual congress for custody of the sports centre, and achieved its aim.
In 1946 the Secretariat of Education and Sport of the SUTGDF was in charge of running the sports centre. From its origins it lacked a budget for its upkeep, so in order to raise funds wrestling and boxing bouts were held in the gymnasium. Around the fifties a monthly card was introduced at a price of $1.00, which gave the right to all the services.
The sports centre had a wide expanse, with a swimming pool, a gymnasium with a wooden floor, tennis courts, a fronton, a frontenis court, a baseball field, an archery range, green areas, a football pitch and offices, among others.
In 1998 the station was renamed from Basílica to Deportivo 18 de Marzo.
