The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is the bust of Aquiles Serdán.
In 1910 the political discontent of the Mexican people with the Porfirian regime overflowed and outbreaks of rebellion began to appear all over the country. The government learned of the intentions of a supporter of Madero named Aquiles Serdán when it discovered that his house held a store of weapons, ammunition and explosives ready to be distributed. A search warrant was issued and Colonel Miguel Cabrera and Major Vicente Murrieta were assigned to carry it out; as they entered the courtyard they were met by a volley of rifle fire that killed them both. On learning of this the authorities ordered the Zaragoza battalion to storm the house, but the defenders held the attackers off for a long time. At last the troops managed to get inside. Women and men were shot down. Seeing that all was lost, Aquiles Serdán ran to the ground floor and managed to hide beneath the floorboards. He stayed there in that uncomfortable position for more than 15 hours, and when he believed the place had been abandoned he came out of his hiding place; on seeing him, his enemies shot him in the head.
