The story behind the icon

Xochimilco (pronounced sochimilco) is the southern terminus of the Light Rail, so named because it lies in the centre of the borough of the same name, famous for its outings in the canoes known as trajineras and for its extensive network of canals, where one can find flora and fauna that once existed throughout the valley of Mexico. The terminus logo is the glyph meaning Xochimilco. It was officially inaugurated on 14 December 2008.

In November 2007 work began on relocating and building the new station in order to increase the capacity of the service, siting it on what had previously been a Light Rail maintenance workshop. The old station (known as Embarcadero when it opened and renamed Xochimilco years later), whose infrastructure had two platforms and a single track for the light rail, was demolished, and in its place is a two-way street with a central reservation that gives access to the new station.
