The story behind the icon
Huipulco is a station of the Light Rail. The name was given to it by the town of San Lorenzo Huipulco. The logo represents a pre-Hispanic glyph.
The town of San Lorenzo Huipulco lies in the south of Mexico City, in the north of the borough of Tlalpan. It is one of the eleven original towns of San Agustín de las Cuevas, today the borough of Tlalpan. The full traditional name in Nahuatl is Huitzpu(o)lco, words of three syllables that can be transcribed with two glyphs, since the final sound or syllable, the ending of the place, is not written; it means place where the sacred thorns of self-sacrifice are destroyed. Because of the difficult pronunciation, the Spaniards changed it to the form in which it appears today.
From the 1970s until the mid-1990s Huipulco was known for the famous Zapata roundabout.
