The story behind the icon

The station icon shows the façade of the Museum of the City. The station takes its name from its location in the Centro neighbourhood, alongside the Museum of the City. This colonial palace, whose construction goes back to 1536, was the palace of the Counts of Santiago de Calimaya, one of the most influential families of New Spain. It was not fully completed, with baroque elements, until the end of the 18th century. It was declared a historic monument in 1931, and in 1960 it became the Museum of the City, when President Adolfo López Mateos decided to create a network of museums; the building suffered severe damage at the hands of its tenants, however, so in 1990 a thorough restoration was begun.

It now houses a permanent exhibition, Everything Fits in a Basin, which offers a historical and geographical view of the Federal District. The Museum of the City also contains the studio of Joaquín Clause. It has as well the Jaime Torres Bodet library, specialising in subjects related to Mexico City, with a collection of 10000 volumes and a newspaper archive from the 19th century.
