The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the silhouette of the headdress of the tlatoani Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, emperor when the Spaniards arrived in Mexico in 1519. The station takes its name from its position near the roundabout dedicated to Moctezuma on Avenida Reforma. The headdress, known in Nahuatl as copilli quetzalli, is a work of the Mexica artists who specialised in creating objects with feathers. It is 116 cm high and 175 cm across. The centre of the headdress is made with blue feathers of the xiuh toto bird and gold discs in the shape of half-moons with precious stones. It has a pink area of tlauquechol feathers and another area of brown cuckoo feathers, from which comes a row of green quetzal feathers. In all it has more than 400 feathers. The headdress is currently in the Ethnographic Museum of Vienna, Austria, where it has been since the Second World War, along with other pre-Hispanic objects.
