The story behind the icon

The station icon represents the graphic emblem of the Mexican Social Security Institute. The station takes its name from the nearby Centro Médico Nacional La Raza. It was during the 1950s that the Mexican Social Security Institute founded the most important hospital complex in the north of the city; this unit, or polyclinic, brings together every medical speciality, answering the need to provide medical care above all to Mexican workers. Since then it has been, and strives to remain, a centre of medical excellence, education and research.

In 1954 the "Hospital de la Raza" was founded as the first General Hospital of the IMSS health system; later, with the opening of the hospitals of Infectious Diseases and of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, the Centro Médico Nacional "La Raza" was formed. The growth of the IMSS led to the creation of the Specialities Hospital, opened in April 1979.

Among its chief achievements is having carried out the first pancreas and heart transplants in the Mexican Republic and the first autotransplant of an adrenal gland to the brain performed in Latin America. The physicians and patients of the Endocrinology Service took part in the study of hypothalamic hormone analogues for the control of reproductive processes by Doctor Andrew V. Schally, Nobel Prize in Medicine 1977. It is currently the most important centre for bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of haematological diseases. As a form of expression about this medical care, important figures of painting such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros created in the lobby and the auditorium majestic murals expressing that medicine must be within reach of all Mexicans.
