The story behind the icon
The station icon represents the cannon preserved in the Jardín de la Ciudadela. The station takes its name from a nearby avenue of that name, and is also a transfer station with Lines 1 and 3 of the STC Metro. The Jardín de la Ciudadela lies at the corner formed by the avenues Arcos de Belén and Balderas; on one side of this landscaped square stands the historic building known as "La Ciudadela", once a military barracks and today the seat of the Library of Mexico and of the Centro de la Imagen.
There is also a cannon there, which recalls the historic episode of the "Ten Tragic Days". The Ten Tragic Days is the name given to the armed movement that took place from 9 to 18 February 1913 to overthrow Francisco I. Madero from the Presidency of Mexico; the uprising began in Mexico City when a group of dissidents took up arms under the command of General Manuel Mondragón. Victoriano Huerta signed an agreement with Félix Díaz in his capacity as head of the federal army, consummating his betrayal by removing the President and the Vice-President; the agreement was made at the seat of the United States Embassy in Mexico with the ambassador's support. That same day Madero and Pino Suárez were arrested and forced to resign. On 20 February Victoriano Huerta was named president through a series of illegitimate manoeuvres, and the revolt culminated on 22 February with the murder of Madero and Pino Suárez.
