The story behind the icon
The station icon is the logo of the Metropolitan Autonomous University.
UAM-I stands for the Metropolitan Autonomous University, Iztapalapa campus, an educational campus on the streets La Purísima and Michoacana, with access from San Felipe de Jesús.
It was founded after a proposal by the National Association of Universities and Institutes of Higher Education together with the Colegio de Bachilleres, the Conalep and other schools. As an outcome of the events of 1968, it began its activities on 10 January 1974, with the architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez as rector. It now has three campuses: Azcapotzalco, Xochimilco and Iztapalapa, the last being the largest of the three, with the greatest scientific and technological activity.
In 1995 the station was renamed from La Purísima to UAM-I.
