The Constitution of 1917 is the body of law that governs us. A product of the Mexican Revolution, it preserves the individual guarantees established in the liberal Constitution of 1857. Promulgated on 5 February 1917 before the Congress of the Union in Querétaro, it came into force on 1 May of the same year. It retains a republican, representative, democratic and federal form of government. The division of powers into legislative, executive and judicial is maintained. The first is subdivided into two chambers, one of deputies and one of senators, elected directly by the people. The President of the Republic was to be chosen by direct vote and to serve four years (later extended to six by an amendment), without the possibility of re-election. Among its most important contributions are secular, free public education, land tenure, private property, relations in the emerging industry between workers and employers, and the separation of the Catholic Church, the other religions and worship from the affairs of the State, among others.
