The story behind the icon
The station image represents the control tower of the Mexico City International Airport and an aeroplane.
The beginnings of aviation in our country go back to the early twentieth century at the Balbuena hacienda. The owner of the hacienda, Alberto Braniff, made on 8 January 1910 the first flight in the Mexican Republic with his aircraft, a Voisin.
Later Balbuena became the military airport and served as such until 1950, the year in which the Air Force moved to the Santa Lucía Military Airport and the land was parcelled out.
The Mexico City International Airport was officially inaugurated on 19 November 1952 with two runways, a few hangars, rudimentary lighting systems and a small passenger terminal building.
Today the Benito Juárez International Airport is the leading metropolitan airport in Latin America; in 2001 it handled a flow of more than 21 million passengers. Internationally it ranks 40th (there are around 5,000 in the whole world).
It has every technical advance and its facilities can match those of the finest airports in the world; on the main concourse there are shops, hotels, banks and bureaux de change, to offer users every convenience.
