The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is of the bust of Manuel Romero Rubio.
Manuel Romero Rubio was born in Mexico City in 1828, practised as a lawyer from 1854 and two years later was elected a deputy to the Constituent Congress. In 1857 he fought the conservative forces alongside Santos Degollado, going on to fight in Zacatecas in 1859 as a member of the troops of Jesús González Ortega. He took part in numerous liberal victories and was again elected deputy.
On 31 August 1876 President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada appointed him secretary of Foreign Relations, a post he left after Lerdo's overthrow in November of that year. Exiled in the United States, he returned to Mexico and was elected senator.
In 1881 his daughter Carmen married the then secretary of Development, Porfirio Díaz. When Díaz formed a government again as president, he named Romero Rubio secretary of the Interior in 1884.
He died in Mexico City on 21 October 1895.
