The story behind the icon

The station image represents the main tower of the building of the National Teachers' School.

In 1890 there existed on Calle Norte a secondary school for young ladies, which its governors transformed into a Normal School. In 1917 the General Directorate of Public Education and Fine Arts was created, on which in principle the normal schools for both young men and young ladies depended.

In 1920, by presidential decree, they came to depend on the University of Mexico and later on the Ministry of Public Education, the body that federalised teaching; for this reason popular education for the whole Republic was centralised in the Normal School.

With José Vasconcelos as rector of the University and also in charge of the Ministry of Public Education, the building for the Men's Normal School was built, which stood on the Calzada México-Tacuba; and for the Ladies' Normal School a beautiful neo-colonial building was built in Santo Tomás.

In 1947 Jaime Torres Bodet, Minister of Education, inaugurated the building where the school stands. Today it is the National Teachers' School, where young people who wish to teach at primary level are trained for four years.
