The story behind the icon

Los Reyes Acaquilpan is the seat of the municipality of La Paz, State of Mexico. Architectural remains of an Aztec III settlement (1430 to 1521 AD) are found here at the foot of the La Caldera hill, consisting of a platform base on a broad terrace. The origins of the town date from the 13th century, when a group of Acolhua origin settled in these parts of the eastern Valley of Mexico and spread to other places such as Coatepec, Chimalhuacán, Atenco, Ixtapaluca and Huexotla.

This town was one of the many calpullis (clans) of Tenochtitlan; when the Spanish conquerors arrived it was called Acaquilpan, which means on the lake. The evangelisers later built a temple dedicated to the wise men, from which the present name is taken.

The town hall building in the municipality was recently demolished, which brought about sharp conflict with the INAH, since it was regarded as a colonial jewel. This place reflects the historical transformation of many events.
