The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is the façade of the church of the convent of San Matías, the first Catholic church characteristic of the area.
Iztacalco is a Nahuatl word made up of the terms iztatl, salt, calli, house, and co, place, so that it means in the house of salt, that is to say, place where salt is gathered or produced.
On the conclusion of the Spanish conquest the Franciscan friars evangelised the few inhabitants of the place and established the convent of San Matías; at that time the inhabitants were no more than 300, and the population remained stable because of the town's isolation.
Iztacalco underwent changes in its territory and in 1978, by an organic law, it became one of the 16 political boroughs into which Mexico City is divided.
