The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is the head of Benito Juárez.
It is the name of a village in the northern sierra of Ixtlán, state of Oaxaca, where Benito Juárez García was born on 21 March 1806. The village's official name is San Pablo Guelatao, a community of Zapotec people. It is part of the municipality of Guelatao de Juárez, lying north of Oaxaca 55 kilometres along federal highway 190 towards the Isthmus.
Built at the start of the seventies, the monument popularly known as the head of Juárez (the icon used by Guelatao station) is an original project by the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros.
At the end of the nineties the borough of Iztapalapa began a comprehensive rescue programme consisting of the restoration of the monument and of the area where the monumental work stands.
With walkways, green areas and recreational zones, the interior is devoted to highlighting the artistic activity of David Alfaro Siqueiros and the political career of Benito Juárez García.
