The story behind the icon
The station icon is an open book representing the Constitution of 1857.
Valentín Gómez Farías was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1781. A distinguished physician and politician, he held his first public office while still very young, in the service of the Spanish parliament.
He took part in the Constituent Congress of 1824 and later was secretary of Foreign Relations in the cabinet of Gómez Pedraza. Appointed vice-president in 1833, he assumed the presidency on five occasions, up to 1847, each time that Antonio López de Santa Anna absented himself from his duties as head of state.
Together with José María Luis Mora he proposed important changes, such as equality among all Mexicans, freedom of expression, the abolition of the privileges of the Church and the Army, and the introduction of deep economic reforms through the amortisation of the public debt and social assistance for indigenous people and the unprotected classes.
For his merits in public service he is regarded as a forerunner of the Reform. He died in Mexico City in 1858.
