The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is of General Pedro María Anaya.
Pedro María Anaya, a distinguished soldier, was born in Hidalgo in 1794. He entered the royalist army at 16, but joined the insurgents after the signing of the Plan of Iguala. He reached the rank of general in 1833, serving as minister of War and Navy.
He temporarily assumed the presidency of Mexico on two occasions, between 1847 and 1848. He defended the convent of Churubusco during the North American invasion of 1847. In August of that year he was taken prisoner and, on being asked by the North American general Twiggs where the ammunition was stored, Anaya replied: if there were ammunition, you would not be here, an assertion that has gone down in history as an episode of bravery.
On the signing of the armistice he was freed and again took up the Ministry of War. He died in Mexico City in 1854.
