The story behind the icon
The station silhouette is General Francisco Villa, revolutionary chief of the forces of the Division of the North and leader of the assembly of conventionists at Aguascalientes.
Villa was a humble countryman whose real name was Doroteo Arango. The master of the hacienda where he lived with his family wanted to dominate him, so he had no remedy but to kill him and flee to the mountains. That is why he changed his name to Francisco Villa. Some men discontented with the government joined him and began to fight the federal soldiers, in that mood of disagreement with the government which most Mexicans were already voicing.
In Chihuahua he managed to gather about 5000 men. On 29 September 1913 Colonel Juan N. Medina argued that those people, who formed the backbone of the revolutionaries who sided with Villa, were by now a division and that it was essential to organise it. Francisco Villa was indeed given command of the Division, and he himself named his closest collaborators.
