The story behind the icon

The station icon shows the façade of the Museum of San Carlos. The building in which the museum stands is attributed to the architect Manuel Tolsá; its construction was carried out between 1798 and 1805 and it was known as the Palace of the Count of Buenavista. The plan of the building is oval, which makes it unique, since there is no other like it in the city. In 1805, after 7 years of building, the Counts of the Palace of Buenavista were able to live in it.

In the 20th century it housed the offices of the Tabacalera Mexicana, of the National Lottery and of National Preparatory School No. 4, until in 1968 the National Institute of Fine Arts assigned it to house the collection of European art from the 14th to the 20th century. Works by Rubens, Carrucci, Tintoretto, Zurbarán, Goya, Ingres, Clavé and Sorolla can be seen there, among other great masters of European painting. It has six permanent rooms and four temporary ones, where exhibitions are constantly mounted.
