The story behind the icon

The station icon represents the church of Santa María Magdalena de las Salinas, located on the Plaza Cívica. The station takes its name from being located in the Magdalena de las Salinas neighbourhood. The pre-Hispanic villages on a small islet north of Tlatelolco were, on being Christianised, organised as part of Santiago de Tlatelolco; that is how Coatlayauhcan became Magdalena de las Salinas, while the other villages of the islet received the Christian names of San Bartolo Atepehuacán, San Juan Hitzahuac, Santiago Atepetlac and Santa María Capultitlán. These villages had ties with the settlements of Azcapotzalco and Vallejo, Santa María Malinalco, San Lucas and all the settlements that now belong to the Azcapotzalco borough.

These areas are small urban centres arising from the transformation of localities, some of pre-Hispanic origin, which during the Viceroyalty became settlements of farmers and craftsmen; the historic fabric of these old villages includes some archaeological remains.

The rapid growth of the urbanised areas at the centre of the borough brought these communities together into one built-up area, and in recent times it has begun to alter street patterns and other elements. That in turn has driven up land values and the gradual loss of the environmental qualities that always characterised these localities.
