The story behind the icon
The station icon represents an observatory.
The origin of the Institute of Astronomy of the UNAM goes back to 1867, when the National Astronomical Observatory (OAN) was founded, beginning on the roof of the National Palace, in the centre of Mexico City.
As a consequence of the growth of the city, this observatory was moved first to Chapultepec Castle in 1878 and later to the Palace of the Archbishop of Tacubaya, now known as the Tacubaya Observatory, inaugurated in 1908.
In 1929 the decree of autonomy of the UNAM was issued and the OAN was incorporated into the University.
