The story behind the icon

The station icon represents a municipality in the centre of the state of Jalisco, made up of 12 localities; the main ones are the municipal seat of Juanacatlán, Juanacaxtle, Zapotlanejo, La Cofradía and Miraflores.

This municipality is classed as agricultural and industrial, and its most important activities are the sowing of maize and sorghum, as well as fishing.

Its name comes from the word Xoconoxtle or "Xonacatlan", which means "Place of onions" (from "Xonaca", onions, and "Tlan", place).

In the surroundings of this locality there is a kind of jícama or "little onion" (as it is commonly known in the region). There are other versions, such as place of butterflies, a name that would derive from Papantl, butterfly, after the greater hill that dominates the landscape: El Papantón.

In 1893 the first hydroelectric plant in the Mexican Republic was installed here, making use of the celebrated waterfall of "El Salto de Juanacatlán", today practically extinct; the region was known as one of the most important in the country.

In 1896 construction began on the cotton spinning and weaving mill beside the hydroelectric plant, which became one of the six textile works in the state of Jalisco.
